Welcome to New Caledonia
The French colony of New Caledonia in the middle of the South Pacific is a fantastic holiday destination. With its fabulous beaches, the largest lagoon in the world and coral reefs, this vacation will be one long remembered!
Travel Air New Caledonia or another carrier to Noumea, the capital. Situated in the south west of Grande Terre, the main island, it is protected from the winds by a central mountainous ridge. Noumea sits on a sheltered deep water harbour which is the country's main harbour. Noumea is very westernised and although it has plenty of sunshine annually and several sandy beaches nearby, it is not considered a tourism hot spot.
Other islands in the group include the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands. Having split from Australia and New Zealand several million years ago, its flora and fauna is unique. See the kagu, a small flightless bird with an unusual call.
The island facilities are there for your enjoyment. Travel outside of Noumea to really taste the local Melanesian culture. A map of New Caledonia will help you to see where to base your accommodation. New Caledonian Tourism will explain where the best sights are and where some fabulous activities are held.
Enjoy kite surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, golf or petanque – French bowls. The New Caledonian weather will see you outside most of the time!
Nouvelle Caledonie, as the French call it, is great for group travel. Grab a travel guide to go it alone and explore the islands. Noumea shops make you feel like you are in Paris, with many chic boutiques. The local currency is the CFP franc. Dine at some world class restaurants, enjoy some fabulous entertainment and grab a bargain at some of the best duty free shopping in the region.
